This project involved upgrading the effluent management system for a 300-cow spring calving farm in Hikutaia.
The farm's previous effluent system used a blocked-off barrier drain with a petrol trash pump, which provided limited and inefficient effluent distribution. The client needed a comprehensive, long-term solution that ensured effective storage, transfer, and controlled application of effluent to pasture.
We designed and installed a complete effluent management system, starting with a new pipeline thrust into the centre of the yard to gain height for better flow. Effluent is now directed through a manual rainwater diverter before passing through a stone trap and 25m³ sump. Stone trap cleanings are stored in a sealed tailings bunker. Effluent is then transferred to a suitably sized HDPE-lined storage pond, where it is stirred and pumped down the farm when soil conditions allow. The system includes Williams pontoons with Yardmaster pumps and mixers for efficient effluent handling.
Our effluent system was a constant source of frustration due to frequent blockages. After consulting with the Williams team, we decided to install an effluent stone trap. The difference has been remarkable! Since the installation, we haven't experienced a single blockage, and our operations run much smoother. The Williams team was professional and efficient throughout the process. I highly recommend their services to anyone struggling with similar issues!
