Project

The original clay-lined effluent pond on this Atiamuri farm failed a drop test and no longer met storage or environmental compliance standards. The pond lacked the necessary capacity for efficient effluent management and had accumulated significant sludge over years of operation. To complicate matters, the existing PVC pipework from the yard was poorly directed and not connected to any solids separation system—leading to inefficiencies and a higher risk of blockages downstream.

The project included:

  • Desludging the Existing Pond: Full removal of built-up solids to restore function and prepare for resizing.
  • Excavation to DESC Size: The pond was dug to meet updated effluent storage requirements based on farm size and rainfall catchment.
  • Redirection of Existing Yard Outlets: Existing PVC pipes from the yard were redirected to ensure correct flow into new solids separation components.
  • New Stone Trap & Solids Bunker Installed: These key components were added to effectively capture and separate solids before entering the pond system.
  • Yardmaster Shore-Mounted Stirrer: Installed to maintain good pond mixing and prevent future solids build-up.
  • Pump Relocation: The existing pump was moved to better suit the redesigned system and ensure reliable effluent transfer.
  • Project Management: From planning through to completion, full project coordination was provided to ensure timelines, compliance, and quality standards were met.

What we did

This upgraded effluent system now provides several aspects. The pond meets DESC requirements, improving environmental performance and future-proofing the system and provides compliance effluent storage. Better Solids management, the addition of the stone trap and solids bunker improves system longevity and reduces maintenance needs. Redirection of PVC yard outlets has eliminated previous inefficiencies and improved flow and functionality of effluent. The Yardmaster stirrer and relocated pump ensure the system runs smoothly day-to-day, providing efficient stirring and pumping every day. With full project management, the Janssens now have confidence in a seamless, compliant, and  cost-effective solution.

By the numbers

Here how the impact of Willliams Effluent Solutions system design brought results for Atiamuri farm.

"Our old clay pond just wasn’t cutting it anymore, it failed the drop test and had nowhere near enough storage for what we needed. We knew we had to upgrade, but weren’t sure where to start. The team made the whole process easy from start to finish. They desludged and reshaped the pond to meet DESC standards, redirected all our old pipework, and added a stone trap and solids bunker that have made a huge difference. The Yardy stirrer and relocated pump are working perfectly, and the whole system now runs far more efficiently. What really impressed us was the project management; everything was taken care of, and there were no surprises. It’s a big weight off our shoulders knowing the system is now compliant and future-proofed. We’re really happy with the outcome."
