An upgrade to provide a new and compliant effluent system.
Following a visit from the Council, an Effluent Improvement Plan was required. The farm had two effluent ponds, one of which had failed a drop test. The existing system lacked sufficient dairy effluent storage, and various limitations highlighted the need for an upgrade. A new system was needed to increase storage capacity while being practical, reliable, and reducing labour input.

Several new infrastructure upgrades were installed to improve effluent management. Effluent now flows from two cowshed yard outlets into a 10x5 stone trap, removing abrasive grit and ensuring clean effluent for irrigation. From there, it enters a Williams 60-cube sump with a child-proof fence, which stores effluent for up to two days. When irrigation isn’t possible changing a valve to directed to a new elevated 40x40x3m HDPE-lined effluent pond via a 75mm PE pipe. A 110mm PE return line with isolation valve was also installed for safety.
A Yardmaster PC pump with a Kelco F60 Switch, float switch, and VSD system was set up on a concrete pad. This setup enables automated flow control, protects against system faults, and transfers effluent to the pond or mainline as needed.
To support storage and application, a new Williams GB Magnum irrigator and 2800m of 110 PE mainline were added. This system irrigates 64 hectares at lower rates, increasing irrigation days and improving storage efficiency. Williams 3-Way Riser Hydrants and an auto shut-off valve on the irrigator prevent ponding and runoff into waterways.
The project was completed with HDPE lining from Agruline, excavation by Steve Barker Excavation, and electrical work by Laser Electrical Ngatea.
