This farm required an upgrade to their effluent storage system. The effluent pond location couldn't be changed, so the existing pond was dug out, desludged and fully prepared for the installation of a new HDPE liner. This ensured a durable , compliant, and long- lasting soluiton.
The existing effluent storage ponds were undersized and did not meet current sealing standards, posing a compliance risk. Additionally, the absence of a stone trap allowed excessive grit and stones to enter the pond, reducing storage capacity and increasing wear on equipment. The outdated irrigator was also applying effluent at excessive rates, leading to inefficient use and potential over-application issues. This project addressed all key issues to ensure the system is now fit-for-purpose, compliant, and efficient.
Using the Massey University Dairy Effluent Storage Calculator, we modelled several scenarios which clearly showed that upgrading the irrigation system significantly reduced the required pond size. This was achieved by increasing the number of irrigation days and boosting the system’s flow rate.
Other contractors were engaged to desludge the existing pond, reshape it to the new specifications, and install a high-quality HDPE synthetic liner. We then installed a new, appropriately sized shore-mounted pump and stirrer, extended the irrigation lines, and upgraded the irrigator to a low-rate travelling system—maximising efficiency and compliance.
